Save Room

Got a lot of stuff you can't leave the house without? Always lugging around a bulky, bursting, heavy bag?

That was me only a few weeks ago. Bag organizers will allow you to, well, keep your bag organized, but it won't make it lighter. I tried to figure out a way to lessen my load, and I did! Try to save room (and energy!) with these tips.

Moisturizer Pot

If you need to moisturize all throughout the day, you don't have to bring the whole moisturizer or lotion bottle. You can get small empty pot containers (usually used for lip balm) at Watsons and transfer just enough to last you a day or two.

The Boyfriend Makeover

By this I don't mean dressing like your boyfriend...

...nor dressing your boyfriend like a woman (or, in this case, a woman with bad taste!)

Let's talk about fashion for men for a change.

Whether they're gay, straight or straight metrosexual men, it's always nice to see men who know how to dress. I like seeing males' individual styles, but sadly, I hardly see this in Manila. It seems that there is a certain uniform style for men here. Usually, it's just the t-shirt-jeans-and-sneakers-or-slippers combo, which is a classic that has become very blah, especially when it's all you ever see on them everyday.

I know that men's fashion is pretty limited, since they can't experiment with a lot of clothing, bags and shoes like women. That doesn't mean, however, that they can just stick with their tees and maong forever!

Here are a few ideas to bring your boyfriend/boy bud/brother/cousin/uncle/dad's style up a notch.

1. Taking It One Step at a Time

Introducing clothes other than his trusty cotton t-shirt might come as a shock to his system, so maybe you should try these soft, comfortable casual alternatives that won't take him away from his comfort zone.

Pairing a knitted or linen hoodie over his everyday uniform would add a little spunk to his usual outfit, (provided that he won't be spending time out in the summer heat.) This is great for a movie date, bar-hopping with the boys or hanging out at Time Zone.

2. A Crisp Alternative

Ditching the t-shirt for a dinner date shows a little more effort from a guy, in my opinion. No, I'm not talking about guys going shirtless -- more like wearing an oxford shirt. (Although the former isn't so bad, either. LOL.) An oxford can either be a casual or dress shirt, depending on the color and fabric. Below is a striped oxford shirt that can be worn with jeans or khakis and white sneakers for a casual look. Some guys can pull this off with leather sandals or loafers, too, but it really depends on the guy's style.

A short-sleeved oxford can also be worn alone, or underneath a t-shirt (as shown in the picture below.) This is funkier than the previous outfit. Take this to the mall, a more casual date, a night out or a concert.

3. Looking Sharp

Guys should really take the cue from Usher and Justin Timberlake and work it in a suit over a shirt paired with sneakers. I've got two words for you: casual cool. If a guy can pull off this outfit, he must be H-O-T!

Ooh la la. If more guys dressed like this, I might be going out on more dates. LOL. Keep in mind, though, that there are a lot of fellas who don't want to have girls bothering them about their style. Perhaps you can just drop hints and leave your laptop open on this page. Your guy just might ask you to go shopping with him!

It's worth a try. ;-)

No More Excess BAGgage

There have been a few times in the past that I bought bags that I hardly got to use. They were either too small to carry all my essentials, or the design and/or color couldn't seem to match my outfits. So I kept them in my closet. They were very nice to look at, but I knew that it was such a waste.

I learned my lesson already. It's still pretty hard when you're at a sale and you see such pretty bags for incredibly low prices, but you know that you don't need them. You need to develop shopping discipline before you throw away your hard-earned money (or your parents', for that matter.)

Get your money's worth when bag shopping; avoid buying bags that you would have a hard time matching with your outfits and your lifestyle. You have to ask yourself: What do you need this bag for? What are you going to put in this bag? How much is your budget? And then go forth and look for the perfect bag!

Say It With Me: V-E-R-S-A-T-I-L-I-T-Y!

As I have said over and over again, versatility is key. For example, it is wiser to get an evening bag that you can also use to spice up casual outfits. Choosing the more spacious metallic slouchy clutch can be more useful than a small boxy wristlet that can only hold a lipstick.

Size matters.

The typical evening bag size is tiny, but you have to make sure that you can fit all of your essentials in it. You can't go to a wedding and only have lippie in your bag, can you? You're still going to need your compact for touch-ups, tissue, a comb, a napkin, your cell phone, your wallet, your keys, etc. Most girls have a lot of essentials (you are probably one of them) and these essentials need space. For more space, you can get a clutch or a slouchy drawstring wristlet. You can fit your stuff in these, but keep it from looking too bulky.

For bigger bags, a bag where everything can "disappear" is never a good thing. You have to be able to locate your things in it. If bag organizers can't do the trick, your bag is probably way too big, honey. Big bags that are wide, instead of long, are easier to use.

Safety.

This has given me a lot of frustration. My mom always reminds me to check if the "opening" of the bag doesn't give pick-pockets an easy time to grab my things. A lot of imported brands, including Lacoste, Braun Buffel and Kate Spade, have bags with only buttons or a flap to close them, and they're very easy to open. In the Philippines, especially in the city, they're not very good buys.

Color and Design.

Make sure that the color and design of the bag would go with most of your outfits, especially your shoes! You don't have to match the color of your bag with your shoes all the time (though I personally prefer it that way) as long as they go well together. My advice for choosing the design is to pick a timeless, classier style that wouldn't be "out" next season. Trendy bags aren't good investments.

Weight.

This has also given me a lot of problems. I've had numerous school bags and corporate bags that were very spacious, classy and beautiful, but they all had the same problem: they were heavy. Perhaps you should first check how heavy the bag is without your things in it before you buy it. It's not enough to see that it's pretty and spacious. You have to be comfortable lugging it around.

The O.C. on Getting Even MORE Organized

I am one of those incredibly obsessive compulsive people who like to see all of their things neat and organized. I've had stacks of clear books that I used to compile all of my exams, quizzes and handouts per semester. I've used clear plastic two-pocket makeup kits -- one as my kikay kit and another as my "pencil case" (which contains a lot more than just pencils, I tell ya -- more like the whole school/office supplies section of National Bookstore!) I have even used toolboxes -- those with lots of compartments -- to sort out my accessories.

The only things that I couldn't seem to keep organized are my BAGS! I carry a lot of stuff with me all the time, (being the ultimate O.C.,) and these make my bag look more like a (very kikay) trash can. LOL. Recently, I read about bag organizers. Whoever invented this is such a complete genius! (He/she is most likely a neat freak, as well!)

Check out my first bag organizer from SM Department Store which I got for only 129.75Php (about US$2.70)!

It's made of nylon and has a lot of compartments, including a special pocket for your cellphone, a keychain and a purse attached to it for your loose change. Its handles allows you to transfer it from one bag to another very easily. Available in black and hot pink.

The bag organizer from SM, however, is too big for my clutches and smaller purses. I also need a bigger one that I can put in my school bags. I found the missing two at Kikay Exchange, which I plan to purchase online as soon as I get a G-Cash account! They are just as affordable, with the small version selling at 130Php (about US$2.70) and the bigger one at 150Php (about US$3.00).

Small Bag Organizers

Big Bag Organizer (black bag not included)

I first found out about bag organizers from my fellow blogger Val! She got her bag organizers at Greenhills. They are sold as a set of two (one big and one small) for only 250Php (about US$5.20). But take it from Val and use your charm; haggle to get them for a lower price! Thanks for the tip, Val! :-)

Check out Val's photos of the bag organizers from Greenhills here.

This is definitely a bag must-have. Put it on your shopping list, ladies. This new innovation will make our lives a lot easier. ;-)

Stay organized!

Fab Filipino Flavor

I am going to feature two Pinoy designers who have created innovations in terms of style and function in bag design. Amina Aranaz and Rafe Totengco have indeed made our country proud with their exquisite pieces.

ARANÁZ Bags

Amina Aranaz is the lady behind ARANÁZ bags. Amina is based in Manila, Philippines and has been designing bags since 1998.

ARANÁZ bags are known for their precious native materials, fine detailing, first class craftsmanship and distinct style.

The "Look Ma, No Hands" Series from the Disco Queen Collection (October 2006)

Amulet Necklace Purse (price unavailable) and
Medallion Necklace Purse, 1,750Php (about US$36)

I am crazy about the "Look Ma, No Hands" Series. I'm definitely getting my hands on one very, very soon. The "disco bags," (created by Amina in collaboration with Jenni Epperson,) were created so that women wouldn't have to "worry about their purses all night." As Amina stated in her Multiply blog, "...I designed inventive embellished necklace bags that are just big (rather small) enough to fit a credit card and some bills (approx. 5inches in diameter.)"

Her new Summer 2007 collection was showcased at the Metrowear Summer Fashion Show last March 22, 2007 at the Hotel InterContinental Manila. On the left is a sketch of one of the bags from the collection, which, according to Amina, was inspired by Queen Amidala sunbathing on the moon.

On her blog, Amina describes the new collection as having a "space age vibe mixed with pure and natural elements." The bags range from small purses (similar to the amulet and medallion bags of the Disco Queen Collection) to big totes and satchels that are roomy enough for beach gear. Some of the materials Amina used for the collection are natural straw, clear plastic and silver. On her blog, she says, "this time it's all about showing off what's inside a woman's bag! And to help her keep her stuff organized, I will make complementary pouches that are equally as gorgeous that she'd be more than happy to expose!"

Check out the ARANÁZ boutiques at Greenbelt 5 and the Power Plant Mall. Those outside the Philippines CAN buy online through Bamboo Closet, (although the styles available are limited.)

Rafē New York

Jessica Alba with the WEST FOURTH Milla Foldover Shoulder Tote in dark brown, $475.00 (about 23,000Php)

Another Pinoy designer is Rafe (pronounced RAH-fee) Totengco who is now one of the most acclaimed designers in New York. He has made quite a splash abroad, with celebrities such as Jessica Alba, Eva Longoria and Lindsay Lohan sporting his bags.

Rafe designs luxury bags, as well as footwear and small leather goods that are, as described in his website, "relaxed chic." He has shops in New York and Japan and distribution at boutiques and department stores in other countries.

The problem is, I don't think online orders from the Philippines are accepted at www.rafe.com (which is very puzzling.) I don't know if there are distributors in the Philippines already, but you can make inquiries through the website.

I LOVE the dark brown Milla Foldover Shoulder Tote (shown in the pictures above) because it can be worn in three ways -- as a hand bag, shoulder bag or body bag. At $475, (about 23,000Php,) I think it's worth the price.

COZUMEL Adriana Shoulder Basket in white, $395 (about 19,000Php) and
UNION SQUARE Brooke Wedge Sandal in white, $295 (about 14,200Php)

GRACIE SQUARE Courtney 75MM Patent Wedge in black, $325.00 (about 15,700Php) and
WEST FOURTH Alexis Foldover Clutch in black, $275 (about 13,300Php)

GRENADA Amanda Medium Satchel in white, $495 (about 24,000Php) and
UNION SQUARE Uma Strappy Sandal in white, $295 (about 14,200Php)

I say Rafe should think about putting up shop in the Philippines. His bags and shoes may have hefty price tags, but with many Louis Vuitton-loving Pinoys, there is definitely a big possibility of him having a huge fan base here.

Kudos to Amina and Rafe for their excellent work! I hope to see more of them in the local fashion scene in the future.

Closet Keepers

With so many fashion trends coming up everyday, how can a girl possibly keep up?

In the first place, keeping up with every single trend is a BIG NO-NO unless you want to be a fashion victim. It is wise to choose only a few trendy pieces that suit you well just to keep your wardrobe updated.

The key to a fabulous wardrobe is knowing what works for your body, and of course, your personality. It's all about choosing what looks good on you and what makes you feel good.

On the other hand, there are also some basic wardrobe necessities that should be in every woman's closet. I have come up with a list of wardrobe must-haves that should help you begin to build a spanking-new wardrobe that would last you a very long time.

10 Classic Pieces You MUST Have in Your Closet

1. The White T-shirt

Whatever your body type is, you MUST find a plain white t-shirt that fits you well. It should be just right -- not too tight and not too loose. This is a very versatile piece of clothing that you can either wear alone or jazzed up with accessories and other pieces. When you do find the perfect tee, get a dozen 'cause you might not be able to find another one like it.

2. The Perfect Pair of Jeans

Levi's 551 Flare in Deep Blue and Mid Blue

Gap indigo skinny fit jeans

Determine the right pair for your body type. Look at the style and the wash. For fuller figures, a long pair with a dark wash would be flattering. For slimmer body types, anything should work. If you're really thin, though, a lighter wash would work well for you. Be more bootylicious with back pockets. Again, it shouldn't be too tight or too loose, unless you're going for the skimpy or baggy look.

3. The Little Black Dress a.k.a the LBD

Every girl should have the perfect LBD that can be worn on almost any dressy occasion -- a big date, a cocktail party, and other semi-formal events. Keep in mind, though, that in some countries like the Philippines, black is not advisable for weddings and debuts. Choose a stylish, classic dress that wouldn't go out of style. I suggest you buy a knee-length dress because it's the most versatile length -- not too short and sexy and not too long and conservative. Always check the quality of the fabric and workmanship. Finally, make sure you can move in it!

4. Dressy Shoes

Whether you prefer closed shoes or open-toed sandals, make sure you have at least one pair of dressy shoes that you can wear to formal and semi-formal events. They can be stilletos, kitten heels, wedges or even flats. They don't always have to be metallic or sparkly as long as the design is dressy enough. For instance, velvet and leather can work well, too.

5. The Purse

Some call it the "evening bag" but why call it that when you can use it at daytime? Anyway, you will definitely need a purse to go with your dressy shoes. Call me traditional but in my opinion, it's best to match the color of your bag with your shoes. It looks sleeker and more put-together.

6. The Crisp Button-Down Shirt

A button-down shirt, like the white tee, can take you a long way. This can be worn casually with jeans, shorts or even a mini. Dress up a white one with slacks and a blazer or just a black knee-length skirt for dressier occasions. It doesn't really matter what color or non-color you get, but white and black are always good options. Long or three-quarter sleeves look classier than short-sleeved or sleeveless ones, but it also depends on your body type. Longer sleeves would suit any body type, but the more voluptuous should stay away from shirts with clingy material.

7. Sneakers

Perhaps I'm just a big fan of white, but white sneakers just look so much classier than black or multi-colored ones. Whether you're wearing them for sports or just for everyday use, you're gonna need a good pair that would last you a long time. Lacoste has great white sneakers and rubber shoes that would go with any outfit. That's another good thing about white -- you won't have trouble matching it with your outfits. On the other hand, if you like color, that's good, too. Just choose a pair with colors that would match your casual/sporty wardrobe. Make sure you won't end up looking like a Christmas tree!

8. Sunglasses

You don't have to be a celebrity to sport a really nice pair of sunglasses. Aside from its style factor, it's good for protecting your eyes from the sun, too. (Wow, really? LOL.) The most critical part in shopping for sunglasses is choosing a pair that suits your face shape. Check this out for a guide.

9. A Good Watch

Everybody should have a good quality watch. It's very practical since you're going to be using it everyday (unless you buy yourself a Rolex.) It doesn't have to be very expensive, but it's good to invest in a branded watch that looks smart and sleek and has excellent quality that would stand the test of time. (Pun intended.)

10. Jewelry

It is wise to invest in the real thing because the value of your jewelry increases over time. Gold and, of course, diamonds are forever, but if you can't afford these just yet, statement jewelry would be your best bet. Bold beaded necklaces, solid metal or wooden bangles and smart pendants are some pieces that can spice up your outfits. In addition, find nice earrings that flatter your face shape. Make sure that you have at least one complete set of jewelry for formal occasions that includes a pair of earrings, a necklace and a bracelet.

So there you have it. Now you're probably itching to shop for the pieces you don't have yet. Happy shopping!
