Galera Getaway

I wasn't able to hit the beach this summer until the end of May! It was difficult for me and my boyfriend to schedule another vacay because of our tight schedules, but we finally managed to squeeze in a quick trip to Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro.

From Alabang, we took a bus to Batangas Pier where we transferred to a boat. If you’re not too lazy to drive, you can also park your car at the pier.

Since the Father and Son Shipping Lines had two stopovers at other parts of the island, we were at sea for about an hour and a half. The ride was smooth, though, and I had fun looking out at the ocean and taking photos. Other passengers even brought snacks and played music. Unless you’re prone to seasickness, you’ll definitely enjoy the boat ride. Just make sure to wear really comfortable clothes—preferably shorts and a breezy top—because even if it’s windy it can get pretty hot.

I was surprised about how beautiful the beach was. It was my first time in Puerto Galera and I wondered how a place so popular and accessible can still be so nice and clean. There were little pebbles near the shore but the sand was quite fine.

There were also a lot of bars and restaurants serving fresh, delicious fare. I don't think there was a meal over 200PhP, and there was a wide variety of grilled meats and seafood, salads and other veggie dishes, and even all-day breakfasts! Fresh fruit shakes were also available in all of the restos and bars we dined at.

One of the best parts is that you can get a massage right on the beach. Masseuses in uniform tees with their names printed on them just walk along the shore carrying mats and oils so you won't be able to miss them. My masseuse, Shirley, was even kind enough to wait until my boyfriend and I finished up our little photo shoot. I got a massage while waiting for the sunset. It was amazing!

There was also a whole strip of affordable beach front hotels to choose from so looking for a place to stay was not a problem. Though we had online reservations, other tourists were just walk-ins. So if you're from Manila and thinking about getting a quick vacation minus the hassle of long bus rides or a plane ride, Puerto Galera is the perfect destination!
