My Favorite Hat

I prefer tangy frozen yogurt over the sweet, extra creamy kind, which is why I love The White Hat!

My current favorite froyo combo is the Health Nut Hat. It has granola, cranberries and kiwi--definitely healthy and so darn delicious.

The Key to Clump-free Lashes

I hardly write beauty blog posts, and when I do, my entries are usually limited to lip gloss, nail polish, runway/celebrity makeup looks, and only recently, eyeliner, because I'm still in the process of finding the right products for myself.

A chat with a friend got me treading into mascara territory, though, and I'm thrilled to share some of my discoveries with you.

Don't try this at home!

One of my very good friends Corin told me that she tried to separate her lashes the way Julia Roberts did in the film Charlie Wilson's War (fast forward to 1:30 in the clip above) but found it to be really scary! She thought about safer strategies and came up with...

...Cor's Eyelash Refining Chorva! (LOL)

What you need:
  • A toothpick or a pin
  • A piece of tissue
  • An eyebrow and lash grooming brush
  • A thin pencil or a pen (preferably with a light-colored body)
How to do it:

Strategy #1
  1. Get the pencil/pen and place it over your clumpy/sticky lashes.
  2. Tear a piece of tissue and place it underneath your lashes.
  3. Press your lashes and pull them outward until you get rid of the clumps/excess mascara.

Strategy #2
  1. Get the pencil/pen and place it beneath your clumpy/sticky lashes.
  2. Get your eyebrow and eyelash grooming brush and place the fine bristles over your eyelashes.
  3. Roll the pencil/pen underneath your lashes outward.
Strategy #3 (This is what Cor finds to be the most effective!)
  1. Get the pencil/pen and place it beneath your clumpy/sticky lashes.
  2. With your toothpick/pin, separate and remove the clumps from the top of your lashes.

The pencil/pen protects your eyes from getting poked while getting rid of your mascara clumps. But of course, you'd still have to be very careful!

Cor recommends Fasio Waterproof Hyperstay Mascara, which gives her longer looking, more voluminous lashes. She noted, however, that the downside is that, true to its name, it's very difficult to remove.

I've found that Johnson's Baby Oil does the trick! I've also sampled the Clinique Take the Day Off Makeup Remover, which is good for more stubborn, long-lasting makeup like gel eyeliner and gel mascara.

If you really want to play it safe, on the other hand, you can try the L'Oreal Clean Definition Telescopic Mascara, which may not give as much volume but adds length minus the clumps!

Have fun playing up your peepers!

Summer Salads

I got great feedback about my January post on yummy salads, so I thought I'd feature more of my salad recommendations. These are very filling, making them perfect for when you're working on getting a beach-ready bod this summer!

Grilled Chicken on Fruity Salad
Pancake House, Congressional Avenue, Greenbelt 1 (see the list of other branches here)
The name says it all. The tasty chicken, grilled to perfection, tops a toss of fruits in season--mangoes, papayas, melons and grapes. Mixed with some tomatoes over lettuce, this salad already packs enough punch even without the dressing.

Chicken Salad
Pho Hoa, TriNoma, Shangri-la Plaza (see the list of other branches here)
Pho Hoa's generous servings of lettuce, cabbage strips, carrots, cucumbers, chicken, onions and nuts and basil make its Chicken Salad a complete meal in itself. One of the things that makes it stand out is the dressing, which is syrupy, vinegary and a little spicy. It's tough to describe, really, and I can't quite figure out what it's made of. The good thing is you can purchase a bottle for only about 180Php!
